Testimonials

The following are testimonials submitted by both players and staff, and hopefully will serve to tell you a bit about the game, and why we're still around after all these years. Enjoy!

"Oddly enough, I've never really been a roleplay person. I never liked Dungeons and Dragons. I do read Terry Pratchett a lot, and did read Tolkein as a kid, but even reading Robert Jordan as a side project I don't consider myself a big 'fantasy' person. But it's funny what you pick up looking for a different kind of game.

Soon after the Adventure games went out of mode (Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, Broken Sword) I found myself hankering for something with more story substance than Half-life. I craved depth more than anything - the feeling that I wasn't being thrown a yarn just to justify having to kill everything in sight.

That's when a friend suggested Carrionfields. I thought 'Text based gaming? Didn't that die, with the dinosaurs?' - I couldn't have been more wrong. Where once it was a 'glorified chatroom' - now you have the best sides of a Game and a hands-on fantasy Story. This isn't like anything else. Because it covers so much more. Second life claims to give you a virtual representation of yourself, but who wants to be themselves? Why not a casual conjurer turned mystic soldier in Nexus? Or join the Orc WarClan? Or my heart, my soul, my life for the Empire?

These aren't different games. This is one game, with more facets than a d20, more death than Counterstrike and more depth than all the Monkey Islands! And I've not regretted a moment."

"I started playing Carrion Fields (CF) in 1998 or so. Back then, a site called the Mud Connector (which is still around) had about 400 mud listings. I tried every single last one of those (high school students can do things like that) and decided that CF was the best of the lot. To this day, CF remains the single best game there is. What it offers, that no other game matches, is a superb combination of action and roleplay. CF has a mixture of PvP focused gameplay and thematic player interaction that is unparalleled.

Carrion Fields is the only game I've played that manages to make roleplay and PvP work together. In CF the roleplay creates a framework that brings the game alive, while in other games it's a roadblock to the action. CF has the tactical and strategic PvP elements of an FPS like Counterstrike or Wolfenstein: Enemey Territory, but with a far more enjoyable world. An MMORG like World of Warcraft, does a good job with its storylines and atmosphere, but has barebones, simplistic PvP system, and a lot of mindless grinding. In comparison, CF cuts the grind down, adds intricate and exciting PvP gameplay while keeping the kind of atmosphere that an FPS lacks."

"To be honest, I started playing CF because I didn't understand a goddamn thing that scrolled across my screen..and just had to :p I do play other graphic games from time to time, but CF certainly has more depth over time, and I like the constant evolving of things and events, where even you can impact history.

If you like exploration, you will definitely not be disappointed with the complexity and variety of area types here. If you like roleplaying, it is what this MUD is about too. A place with real intelligence and interesting characters. Playerkilling, politics and war are also encouraged here, so you will definitely not miss out on any action. And it isn't just slack-n-hash, but an entire arsenal of class-specific skills/spells/supplications/songs that will definitely interest the strategist or tactician out there. Many of the classes are also 'customisable', such as warriors, who can choose how they'd like to build their own warrior type through 2 of 36 legacies, and 2 of 8 specialisations, and that's just ONE class.

I can't force you to play this game and love it like I do :p But all I'd like to say is that I've never regretted picking it up."

-Yean, Interactive design & development.

"Believe it or not, I started playing CF in middle school. I would head to the library every day after school with a group of friends so we could plug in. I remember the days of being completely terrified that I might hit that sacred level eleven and the bomb of PK would drop.

At twenty-four, I’ve obviously come a long way as a player. CF has grown, and I grew right along with it. I’ve tried other MUDs briefly, but to me nothing can compare to the game of Carrion Fields or the experiences I have attached to it. The devoted staff with their constant updates keeps me plugging in for more. I encourage you to grow along with Carrion Fields, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss."

"I didn't even know what a "MUD" was when I once ended up browsing a list of them... Hmm, fantasy theme, an appropriately gory name, roleplaying... that might be nice. That was almost 10 years ago, and not many games can hold their luster for so long; they lack the infinite replayability and constant evolution. Sure, Doom is still an old classic but CF is an always new classic. It's not plain hack'n'slash, it's no endless posing in a chatroom: THIS. IS. CF!!!"

- Mort. Player.

"I started playing Carrion Fields for a couple of reasons, but the chief reason was that it was, is, and always will be FREE. I've always loved computer games of all kinds, but I can honestly say this is the favorite game I've ever played. I stopped playing for a five-year span due to a new job and less time on my hands, but about a year ago I started again and I am (re)hooked!"

- Twist, God of Magic, Eddies and Currents of Mana, Thera

"I started playing CF in the fall of 2005 after an eight-month period in which I did not have internet. Before that I had tried other MUDs and had always found something which kept my interest from developing into addiction. Well, CF got me on my very first character. I think it was when I killed the Marshall of the Fortress, a priest who sought to teach me the error of my evil ways, and had on several earlier occasions. Doing the Tiger Woods fist-pump at my desk and earning the bewildered stare of my girlfriend, sadly I will always remember that day :). Or perhaps it was when a random NPC who I had passed many times in my daily life began to talk to me after I was slain by a warrior of the Same Fortress of Light, eventually restringing my bland everyday title as the Legend of the Battlefield and letting everyone know of my Past(role). Or maybe when I was shown the intricate secrets of a dark and dangerous place located somewhere by a stygian mage who was feared throughout the realm.

As you can see, CarrionFields offered me everything I could have ever wished for in a MUD. Player Killing, roleplay, intricate areas, innovative skills, hands on IMMs, IMMs who code, IMMs who accept feedback, players willing to share intimate game knowledge with a fledging newbie, players willing to kill same fledging newbie and then offer some words of advice, players willing to weave fantastic stories and truly bring all your fantasies (no not those fantasies) to life."

- Patrick Z., Player

"Ever just sit and think about a game, thats not just a game, but some awesome complex of information put forth by some dieties to challenge your mind to a new extreme. More than tekken, halo, and warcraft combined. This mud has so many possibilities and combanations to implode your mind before you even pass character creation. Those you meet will bring hate, envy and glory to you at every chance. Take the chance and play it when your minds not right, and you could go about an enigmatic theormy, stone crazed to a new altitude ridding a orc into the murky depths. When it looks at you say please."
